Seven steps to vocabulary learning

Have you ever considered why a learner (even an advanced one) can hear a difficult English word or phrase literally thousands of times and still not use that word in the way that a native speaker does? You might expect that, after having been exposed to a word in ten, twenty, or maybe at the very most thirty, contexts, a learner will gradually piece together the word's meaning and start to use it correctly, appropriately and fluently.

* Classroom context

* Seven steps to vocabulary learning

* Conclusion

Classroom context
Of course we cannot expect a learner to acquire difficult words in the same way as a young child acquires their first language, but, perhaps as teacher we can somehow help learners to arouse their 'learning monitor' by, for example, providing rich contexts containing the target language and by giving our learners time to reflect on what the language item means. In this way teachers can use the EFL classroom to replicate the real world and nurture strategies to help students understand and produce difficult language items which often seem beyond their grasp.

Seven steps to vocabulary learning
Here are some practical steps that I have used to help my students. As an example I want to focus on one very tricky word ('actually') and suggest ways that a student can understand what it means, and, thereafter, be able to use it more fluently. This model (which consists of seven steps) can be used for any difficult word/phrase.

Step 1
I get my students to listen to the word or phrase in authentic-sounding dialogues
Here are the dialogues I use for 'actually':

* Do you want a chocolate?
No, thanks. I'm on a diet actually.

* Do you want a coffee?
Actually, I'm a bit pushed for time.

* Could I just borrow your book for a moment?
Actually, I'm just about to use it in class. Sorry.

* How's John doing?
Actually, he's doing all right!

* Ready to go?
Yeah…erm…actually I'm going to take my umbrella. It looks like it might rain.

* I see you're still following your diet! (meant sarcastically)
Actually, I've lost a couple of pounds since we last met.

I think the students need at least six contexts to start to understand all the different nuances of meaning of a difficult target item.

Step 2
I give my students plenty of time to study the word in these contexts, so that they can work out what the meaning / function is. I either get them to study the contexts individually and then get them to compare their thoughts in pairs or groups or I get them to discuss in pairs / groups straight away. I prefer the first option, because, this way, each student gets more time to think for him / herself.

Step 3
I discuss the meaning in plenary. I do this in two stages. First, I simply say "So what do you think?" Then, after having heard their thoughts, I ask concept questions that uncover the heart of the meaning.

Examples of concept questions for actually might be:

* Is the speaker saying something quite important?

* Does the speaker give the other person the answer they want / expect?

* Is the speaker asserting him/herself?
Answers: a) important; b) not; c) standing up for him/herself

After doing such concept question work, I use a summing up concept statement, like this one: "So we use 'actually' after someone asks us a question (often a request or offer), and we don't give them the answer they want or expect."

Step 4
I provide a phonological model (including pronunciation, stress, and intonation) in a surrounding sentence.

Most native speakers devote three syllables to 'actually', the stress is on the first syllable, and there is a rise/fall/rise intonation pattern (which signals the conflict in the situation).

Step 5
I provide a prompt - to elicit use of the word in a natural way.

Here are some prompts I use for actually:

* "So what do you think of __________ ?" (London) I use a facial expression to show that I expect a positive response.

* "Would you like a cigarette?"

* "Shall we go out for a meal tonight?"

* "How's your friend Bill?"

If I don't get the response I want, I repeat and try to get another student to help. Then, if necessary, I get individual students to repeat the response until they feel completely comfortable with it.

Step 6
I set up a simulation, providing students with the chance to say the word in a natural situation. I distribute the following scenario and get two of my stronger students to act it in front of the class and then I get all the students to act it in closed pairs (rotating roles). This is an example scenario I have used for 'actually'.

John and Mary are in a pub.
1. John asks Mary if she'd like an alcoholic drink.
2. Mary declines this (as she doesn't drink alcohol).
3. John buys her some mineral water.
4. Mary suggests sitting down.
5. John agrees.
6. John asks if it's OK to light a cigarette.
7. Mary says she's got a bronchial problem. (etc.)

Step 7
I set up a review schedule, in which words are elicited and practised. It's always important to review such lessons in the future, but each time I do this, I spend less time on it, and insert bigger gaps between the inclusion of this language item in the review sessions. Ultimately, I reach the point where I just need to say to someone "Fancy a chocolate?" and I automatically get the response "Actually I'm on a diet."

Conclusion
Students who are living in an English speaking country are often happy learning what difficult words and phrases mean through their everyday study or work lives, but for the majority of students, learning a language is a slow and painful process, and we must try to do something to accelerate the pace of learning. My students should, I believe, benefit from the teaching procedures I've described in this article. If they learn words and phrases in this systematic way in class, they are not only likely to achieve more communicative success in class but also to become more aware of the how they learn and the knowledge they need to acquire to learn words more successfully.

Unconditional Love

"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me"
"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him." "There's something you should know the son continued, "he was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mind and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."

"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."
"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us." "Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking.
Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden on us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."
At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police.
Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide.
The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know, their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are like many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable.
We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.
Thankfully, there's someone who won't treat us that way. Someone who loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into the forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.
Tonight, before you tuck yourself in for the night, say a little prayer that God will give you the strength you need to accept people as they are, and to help us all be more understanding of those who are different from us!!!

There's a miracle called Friendship That dwells in the heart You don't know how it happens Or when it gets started But you know the special lift It always brings And you realize that Friendship Is God's most precious gift!
Friends are a very rare jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts to us. You now have 2 choices.
1.) Show your friends how much you care.... Send this to everyone you consider a FRIEND. If it comes back to you then you'll know you have a friend for life.
2.) Don't send this to anyone and act like it didn't touch your heart.

Rossi wins at Laguna Seca

From correspondents in Laguna Seca, California
July 21, 2008

ITALY'S Valentino Rossi has stretched his lead atop the MotoGP standings with a triumph in the US Grand Prix.

The Yamaha rider, a seven-time world champion, emerged victorious after a fierce duel with reigning world champ Casey Stoner, who finished second aboard a Ducati, with Stoner's fellow Australian Chris Vermeulen third on a Suzuki.

Stoner, winner on the challenging, hilly Laguna Seca layout last year, had dominated all of the free practice and qualifying this week, and had won the last three races from pole position to thrust himself into the title picture.

With the victory, however, Rossi took his total atop the standings to 212 points, 25 points in front of Stoner (187).

“For me it has been fantastic,” said Rossi, whose previous forays at Laguna Seca have been disappointing.

“It's the first time that I've been able to win here, and it was an unbelievable race. The crew made some modifications, and I was able to take a much better pace.

“I had a good start, then a great battle with Casey, which was a lot of fun. It's an important victory - very emotional - and now in the summer break we will relax, because the championship is so long.”

The two riders had separated themselves from the field when the deciding moment of the race occurred at the end of the 23rd of 32 laps.

As Rossi and Stoner prepared to enter the home straight, having battled at each corner, Stoner went wide into the gravel and his attempt to push himself back with his foot saw him fall.

“It was race over after that,” said Stoner, who resumed in second place, and couldn't catch his Italian rival, finishing 13 seconds adrift.

While Stoner enjoyed the duel with Rossi, he indicated he thought some of his rival’s tactics were dubious.

“I enjoyed a lot of the race, but I felt that some of the passes were a bit too much for me. I've been racing for a lot of years and have come through a lot of different ranks, and for me just a couple of passes were a little too much. I would have liked to have had a little bit of a cleaner battle,” he said.

“Anyway, we are happy with the result. We're still at the front of the championship and not too far off,” he said.

The runner-up finish allow the 22-year-old to take over second place in the standings.

Spain's Dani Pedrosa, who was lying second overall coming into the race, withdrew before qualifying after his practice runs showed his broken left wrist and injured ankle - suffered in a fall in the German Grand Prix - just wouldn't allow him to compete.

Rossi's victory brought an end to Stoner's storming run of victories at Britain, the Netherlands and Germany.

The Italian, whose seven world titles include five in the premier MotoGP category, added a first career win at Laguna Seca to titles in China, France and Italy already this season.

Unusually, the US stop includes only the premier world championship category. The 125cc and 250cc series will resume alongside the MotoGP at the Czech Grand Prix in Brno on August 17.

The Doctor vs Casey Stonner

Wow, it's mid-July already and that can mean only one thing… Red Bull U.S. Grand Prix time! And unlike years past, temperatures aren't expected to be a 100 and hellish as weather forecasts call for mild yet sunny days. This weekend marks the fourth consecutive year of MotoGP and AMA Superbike series wedlock since reappearing together in 2005. It also marks the debut of MotorcycleUSA's new print magazine, MotoUSA. If you're going to be at the track this weekend, stop by Booth No. 93 inside Turn 3 and pick up a complimentary copy.

As opposed to last year when Marlboro Ducati's Casey Stoner already had a substantial points lead over the rest of the field, after 10 rounds it's Fiat Yamaha's Valentino Rossi who's in control in the World Championship points standings. With only 7 races left this season, Rossi has pulled a small 16-point gap over Repsol Honda's Dani Pedrosa, who crashed out of the lead in last weekend's wet German GP. Pedrosa fractured his left hand and sprained his right ankle, but he's going to attempt to muscle through the pain this weekend at Laguna.

"Laguna is a physically demanding track when you are 100 percent, so it will be tough with my injuries," said Pedrosa. "I will do my best to ride this weekend. We know that it will not be easy and that we won't know my exact situation until I get on the bike on Friday morning."

Pedrosa's misfortune last weekend bodes well for Rossi however, as this is a perfect opportunity for him to make up ground on one of his nemesis this season.

"Laguna hasn't been one of my favorite tracks in the three years since we've been going there and it's one of the only ones on the calendar where I haven't won," explained Rossi. "The last two years I've had serious disappointments in the race and it's been one of the low points of both seasons, I hope I have had all the bad luck I'm going to have there and that this year I can enjoy myself! We are going there with the same package that we had in Germany and so we're going to have to work very hard to close the gap in performance to Stoner."

Sitting in third place in the series points is the defending World Champion—Casey Stoner. Although his season started off shaky, the young Australian has won the last three races at Donington, Assen, and Sachsenring. Not only that, but he dominated at Laguna last year, winning the race by a margin of almost 10 seconds.

"The race at Laguna last year really was fantastic and it would be amazing to be able to repeat," Stoner said. "I like racing in America. The fans you meet in the paddock are great - always really pleasant, polite and supportive of all the riders. The track is really nice too; it's great fun but also very demanding with so many elevation changes and tough corners. I like it because it feels 'natural' - it follows the lay of the land and isn't one of those circuits that was designed on a computer."

Despite never having turned a wheel at the 2.2-mile circuit, Rossi's Fiat Yamaha teammate is looking forward to getting on track Friday.

"I am so excited to finally get the chance to race there," said Lorenzo. "It's a very special track which everyone always talks about and I am looking forward to riding at a place with such famous corners as the Corkscrew. I know it's a difficult place but I am feeling stronger and I will be doing my best to get to know the circuit as quickly as possible."

Representing the Tech 3 squad this weekend will be American Colin Edwards and MotoGP rookie, James Toseland. This year has been Edwards' best season thus far in MotoGP and he'll surely be racing hard this weekend in hopes of achieving his first premier class win.

And if racing duties this weekend weren't enough, Toseland will be performing with his band "Crash" Saturday evening in the Yamaha Marketplace from 5-7 p.m.

This weekend the Rizla Suzuki team will have an extra GSV-R on track courtesy of defending AMA Superbike champion Ben Spies. Spies has already made his MotoGP debut at Donington where he finished a respectable 14th position in the wet-race despite having never turned a wheel at the British circuit.

"I am really looking forward to this weekend. It will be awesome to ride the GP bike in front of all the American fans. I know it is going to be hard as these guys are pretty good and I have the added pressure of racing in the Superbike championship as well, but I will be going for it that's for certain!"

Rizla Suzuki regulars Chris Vermeulen and Loris Capirossi will be joining Spies and are also be eager to get a good result in America. Capirossi is still trying to recover from an arm injury he suffered at Assen last month, while Vermeulen is looking to capitalize on his track expertise at Laguna (he won both World Superbike races there in 2004).

"We had a great result in Sachsenring," said Vermeulen, whom finished third last weekend in Germany. "I'm really looking forward to going to Laguna. I really like the track and have done well there in the last couple of years and will certainly be looking to try to take the next step up the podium from last year's position. The bike worked very well there last year and if we can get on the pace early on then there is no reason why we can't make that happen."

With American John Hopkins still recovering from a broken leg sustained in a crash at Assen, it is AMA Superbike regular Jamie Hacking who will be riding Hopper's Ninja ZX-RR this weekend in California alongside Anthony West.

"I'm looking forward to racing at Laguna Seca again, as I like the track and I really enjoy the whole lifestyle thing in California," said West. "I had my best result of the season at this track in 2007 with seventh place, and I hope this year's race will prove as successful."

The final American rider competing this weekend at Laguna is Repsol Honda's Nicky Hayden. He won here in 2005 and backed it up again in 2006. However, last year he struggled. Hayden remains optimistic however and says that his tire supplier, Michelin has the goods for this weekend's race.

"I'm excited to go to Laguna, even if we go there on a bit of a run of bad luck," said Hayden. "Hopefully things will turn around for us; it would be a nice place to get everything to roll from Friday through to Sunday. Whatever happens I'll just keep pushing. Last year we struggled, it was our worse place for tires all year. But I'm excited now because I've seen how much Michelin have improved at other tracks this year."

Sex Education Can Be Easy

Sex education has never been an issue with my children. The most important thing you need to know is to look for the everyday opportunities that present themselves and act upon them.

I can remember once being in a car with one of my sons. He was only 8 years old at the time, but was sitting beside a lady friend of mine who was very large breasted. My son said to me, "hey mum, look at this", and opened his mouth like he was going to suck on the lady's breast (as he had seen me breast feed three babies by then). I was mortified and said to David, "that's not the right thing to do, David". I didn't say anything else at the time as it wasn't appropriate. Luckily my friend was very understanding about the incident.

Later on when we were at home I said to him, "so you noticed that my friend has large breasts?" I know that he was only 8 years old but he had noticed something and didn't need to be ignored. Admittedly he went about things the wrong way but he was only eight years old. So I took the opportunity to say to him, "David as you grow older you are going to notice that many of your girlfriends will start to grow breasts. It's just a normal part of growing up. And it is important for you to make sure that when talk to girls you look at their faces and not at their breasts". We had a great conversation and I didn't make a big deal of it. But I did answer all of his questions.

When my children were young I started their sex education by buying books for them. I found a great series of books for various age groups. When my kids were six I used the 6 to 8 year old book. I would read a chapter a night to them. It was a story book called "Where Do Babies Come From?" My kids would sit and listen to it as it was simply the routine they were in to at the time. As they got older we changed our tactics slightly.

Now, the books are in the book shelf for all to read whenever they so desire. I have made it a very natural thing for the kids to talk about sexual things and they feel comfortable asking questions. It is far better for you to answer your child's questions than to let them hear things from someone else, because that someone else will be their peers and peers don't always have the facts right. If you promote communication with your child they will come to you when they have questions.

Now my eldest son is sixteen and we have a great relationship. He can talk to me about absolutely anything and everything as I have paved the way for this to happen. If you want to have a great relationship with your child you must work hard to pave the way also which means making the most of every opportunity to communicate with your child about everything including sex. If you don't make it a taboo subject they will feel free to discuss things openly with you.
